Come Hell or High Water

Words cannot describe what makes a true friend, but I am attempting to anyway. It's someone who recognizes your differences and forgives your faults. They know your dreams and push you to strive for them. They celebrate your accomplishments with you and scream your praises from every rooftop. There is no jealousy or envy because your joy is their joy. Affection is apparent in every movement, every laugh. It doesn't matter where you go or what you do because each other's company was the point. Sometimes words aren't necessary; one simple look can convey all thoughts. They may giggle when you trip, but they never hesitate to offer their hands to help you up. They let you borrow their car when yours breaks down or tell you when you have something in your teeth. Late night talks over the phone or at someone's place are the norm. When you meet someone new, they eagerly await the details of your first date, first kiss, first realization of love.

And when you are hurting, they ache for you because what happens to you happens to them. Through fears, death and relationships... words may never be enough, but a friend doesn't need them. They are patience, kind and understanding. They can provide a shoulder to cry on, a plate to break or a pint of ice cream to eat. They offer comfort and hope during times of uncertainty and are always there for you when it's time to pick up the pieces. They feel the burden of your despair, but they never falter or give up on you even when you think all hope is lost. When you start to heal a little, they breathe a sigh of relief for you. This is to all of the friends who have enriched my life by just being you. I never want to take any of you for granted. If I ever do, I expect you to slap me because a friend never lets you off the hook easily either.
